The nanoparticles must be preserved to stop the mRNA from degrading. While Pfizer/BioNTech have to preserve their brand of vaccine at -70C - Moderna's vaccine can stabilize its nanoparticles and keep the vaccine good - at -20C - the temperature of a standard home freezer - making Moderna's vaccine a game changer.
An important factor to note is that the RNA for mRNA vaccines is produce by a chemical process rather than the biological processes used by other vaccines - which involves cell cultures.
This technology has been worked on for some time now - over ten years for sure - so it is not as if - the scientists had to start from stretch.
China helped too - with the genetic mapping or genome details. We know there were some delays in releasing this information - but it was released and reached most scientists all over the world.
Paradoxically China has a Center of Diseases Control in Wuhan, China next to an American Center of Diseases Control - there is something going on - as to why there was a delay.
