As a young man, I traveled to Afghanistan when the Shah of Iran was still in place.
Four months after I left Afghanistan - on my way to Austria - the Russians invaded Afghanistan - the rest is history.
The Russians stay for years and were driven out - America aided the Mujadeen and Osama bin Ladin himself - to drive the Russian out - and they did. Millions of our taxpayers' money were spent on these sordid operations.
After the Russians were moved out, a temporary Afghan government less than two years - and then we had to bomb Afghanistan - when America was terrorized by the terrorist mostly Saudi Arabians - 9/11.
Our General tried their best - to make our soldiers understand - why we needed to be in Afghanistan - the paradox - this message has not been fully understood - today it is convoluted.
Truth be told - no nation going back 500 years had tamed the Afghans - I have met the Afghans - I have lived with them - and I fully comprehend the tenacity and fortitude - of most Afghans.
The British learned their lesson a long time ago - before the partition of India - an entire Battalion was captured by the Afghans - each of them killed by the Afghans - one British soldier was kept alive - tied to a mule - and allow to pass through the Kyber Pass - to India.
The one and only British soldier - told the story - to this day - the British remember the event - and more the Afghan fighters - who are second to none - on terrain that they only know and can survive for years - in caves - and very harsh conditions.
Our soldiers rely on Afghan translators - a farmer, some Afghan who has no clue what is happening - answer questions - and then the American team - makes up their mind - relying on drones - and 5000 lb bombs - to send a message to those we consider our enemy - the enemy consider themselves as freedom fighters - on their own land and have been there for over 15,000 years.
America was NOT involved initially in World War II - we entered the War persuaded by the British - and paid a heavy toll.
President Roosevelt conceded to Churchill - the two men - had a bond - and the rest is history. We read about Dunkirk - thousands of men died. Throughout World War II, men and women sacrifice a lot in building war weapons - bombs, tanks, ships, submarines, and a host of weapons were invented that defeated the Third Reich and the Japanese, the Italians, and those who favored Fascism.
Our Aiabourne is the best in the world - as I said - seeing is believing. The Afghan terrain is horrific - the stones on which one walks - are sharp - leather shoes - torn apart. The heat unbearable - our soldiers have been put in harms' way - while the fucking politicians eat, shit, and make merry.
Our servicemen and women are the best in the world. I do what I can to support them, not the politicians - who talk but cannot walk the walk. We must never put our servicemen and women in harm's way - when we can clearly avoid the situation.
